Reading

Okay, I know I owe everyone a nice long post to update you all, but I have to go to work so that will have to wait a little longer. I'm writing to ask for suggestions on books to read. Whenever I try to pick out my own book it's no good, but when I get suggestions I'm usually really excited about it. So, I'm talking mostly non-fiction here, and would love suggestions of books you've read and enjoyed. Also, specifically, does anyone know a good commentary on the Gospel of John?

Here are some I've enjoyed recently:

1. Following Jesus: Biblical Reflections on Discipleship by N.T. Wright--Short, self-contained chapters, many on certain books of the Bible such as John, Matthew, Colossians, but also on Temptation, The Mind Renewed, etc.

2.The Incomparable Christ by John Stott--Another that has self-contained parts, except in this one it's sections. Stott writes a survey of different perspectives on Christ--historical/church, Biblical, people He influenced, and finally a look at the how Revelation speaks of Christ.

3. A Place of Grace by Susan Hunt--all about the covenant and how it applies to families and the church. She does specifically speak to raising covenant children of your own, but also is very convicting about the fact that we in the church are all a family and must be responsible to care for one another and their children. I'm reading it now and it's been overwhelming and drawing me to God in prayer for his grace to raise Becca.

4. Against Christianity by Peter Leithart--not what it seems in the title. When Nate first bought this, I was like, what?? But it's one of my favorite books now. It contains many short paragraphs within each chapter. The author is against a certain form of Christianity that is all too common in the church and our lives. I need to read it again.

For some fiction books, you may want to check out Kristen's blog: www.thisclassicallife.com. She reads a ton of books, non-fiction and fiction, and has recently posted all the books she read this year. She is a sister in Christ and has great recommendations on books. You might find a new author you like there. Or you can always do what I do and reread favorites, like the Hobbit, Lord of the Rings, Heidi, The Secret Garden, Jane Eyre--of course, those might not be your favorites. :)

Hope you find something you like, Kate. Hi to Andy, too. Hope you are both well.

Waging Peace on Islam by Christine Malhoui (I'm unsure about the spelling of the last name, but positive it starts with an "M") Christine talks about her experience as a Christian living in Muslim culture. She's lived in Egypt, Lebanon, and a bunch of other middle eastern countries.

N.T. Wright once opined on John: "I feel the same way about John that I feel about my wife. I love her, but I wouldn't claim to understand her." I feel the same way.
